It’s Up To You To Communicate Your Vision (Communication is Everything)

by Jamillah Warner

in pay attention, listen

Communication is everything.  We can’t do much without it.  Even when we sometimes lose the words our eyes speak for us, our hands communicate our message, even our grunts articulate our pain.  It’s a natural part of living.

Communication is a skill and an art

But if we remain in the realm of grunts and groans, then we are not much different from babies who scream for milk and scream for diaper changes and scream for pleasure.  While we may still choose to scream, it need not be for a lack of words.  Communication is a skill. And since it’s that important, then we need to pay attention to it.

Communication is a skill and an art.

At its root communication is the personal ability to impart  your vision into the heart and mind of your audience while simultaneously responding to their needs.  It is a dance between you and at least one other.  As a child you were taught to walk, to dress yourself, and to form words,  sentences, and entire thoughts.  The need to learn hasn’t changed much.

Runway Models and Small Business Communication

Before models take the runway they receive lessons in a thing that they have done their entire lives.  They learn how to walk, but not just any kind of walk.  They learn to pay attention to the details and the message. They learn the steps and stride that create interest and intrigue on the runway.  They learn to take walking to the next level.  And it changes their position:

  • …from watching–to doing,
  • …from wanting–to living,
  • …from wishing–to winning on that catwalk.

Fashion Stylists and Communication Style

Fashion stylist and designers do the same thing with clothes.  They develop an eye for the elements of style.  Cultivating the ability to add spark to an outfit, the trained stylist can walk into Walmart and come out with a Neiman Marcus type look and feel, instead of a frumpy every woman style.

But they studied something that they have done their entire lives, getting dressed.  And they began to pay attention to elements of style that the rest of us can’t see yet.  The right training exposes common things for what they are, the hidden keys to your future (and you thought the door was locked).

In this regard, communication is no different from the model walk and the stylish dress, you have to train for it.

Communicating for impact doesn’t just happen.  There is an art to connecting with people…

…to finally getting your point across, to getting over that impasse that you’ve had with your daughter for years, to getting your employees to buy into your vision and take the message to your customers.

Pay attention to the details.

Art has natural elements to it and so does effective communication. There are things that some people just know how to do better than others.  But the power comes in developing that skill, that art through practice.

Becoming a dynamic communicator for the sake of your business is no different than mastering your art or other aspects of your business-it takes effort.

What Good is Your Vision If Nobody Knows It Or Understands It But You? Communication is everything.
